CITADEL - EVOLO 2016 COMPETITION PROPOSAL

World Heritage in Danger

Over 40 properties which the World Heritage Committee has decided to include on the List of World Heritage is in danger. Armed conflict and war, earthquakes and other natural disasters, pollution, poaching, uncontrolled urbanization and unchecked tourist development pose are the major problems to World Heritage sites. The majority of the endangered natural sites are located in Africa and Asia. World conflicts are responsible for destroying over 60% of heritage sites in last 10 years. People all over the globe should think how to help and what to do to protect them.

Millions of children and young people worldwide are affected by armed conflict. They are confronted with physical harm, violence, danger, exploitation, fear and loss. Many children are forced to flee. Some witness the death of loved ones. Some are forced to pull the trigger themselves. Communities are ripped apart and can no longer provide a secure environment for children. Adults are busy surviving, parents have little time for their children. Schools and playgrounds are damaged or taken over by armed groups. One of them which is as dangerous as the others is the religious extremists attacks. The main purpose of this attacks is not religion or faith in its own, but missunderstanding of major principles contained in holly books in every belief.

During conflict, children and young people’s rights are violated on a massive scale; their rights to be protected from violence, abuse and neglect, to live in dignity and be supported to develop to their full potential.
As a consequence of conflict, children and young people can lose their confidence, their trust in others and their trust in the future. They often become anxious, depressed and withdrawn, or rebellious and aggressive.
Growing up in a protective environment is essential for children and young people to develop to their full potential. With a positive outlook, children and young people can shape their own futures and contribute to a peaceful future for their communities.

Wars are not going to disappear overnight, but we can at least mitigate their effects and ensure that they do not target children and women. The following is a proposal to create a safe space for children affected by violence. The designed skyscraper is not only a shelter but also a learning facility. Kids need examples of good behaviour - a mentor whom they can follow. The building provides opportunities to learn and is giving a chance to help teaching their own families how live in new society.

As newcomer gets into the building, he also is absorbed into its society. With support of inhabitants one learns about rules that obtain inside. If he follows them, he progresses. If not - he regresses. As he gets higher in the social structure, he gets more possibilities - to study, to work to life - but also in order to climb up or even keep his position in society, he is obliged to support newcomers and cultivate positive "progressive" values. It is important, that inhabitants understand, that by helping others they help themselfes - becouse they create better society to live in. This is the way of social help in this structure - not simply by giving money, but by giving fair possibilities.

The skyscrapper is a self-building structure. Chitin that is extracted from shrimps’ shells is used to 3D print protective structure around the building with the help of drones. Workers use knowlege from school and research centre to develop new technologies.
