CASABLANCA BOMBING ROOMS

There are few sources which have defined the typology of terrorism. One of them which is as dangerous as the others is the religious extremists attacks. The main purpose of this attacks is not religion or faith in its own, but missunderstanding of major principles contained in holly books in every belief.

 

Following proposal is a result of bombings which had place in Casablanca in 2003 and 2007. The project provides a multicultural library which is located on one of the bombing areas (Casa de Espanaña). It is a multireligious library which the major mission is to help people of every belief internalize not only the principles of their religion, but also to take the closer look at any other and understand its followers.

 

The building in itself is a memorial. Main library room (Bombing Room) is inspired by the bomb explosion which is the cause of the irregular shape in plan and in cross-section. The largest explosion spikes are aimed in the directions of other bombings in 2003 and 2007.

 

Inside the Bombing Room there are book shelves all around the walls and the empty floor spaces are filled with exhibitions of remains of the Casa de Espanaña restaurant as a caution against violence. The interior walls, in contrast to exhibition are white. Books available from the external site of the Bombing Room. By removing books from shelves there is provided additional light to other rooms. There is no title at any of them. Every position is digitally marked and by using tablets or mobile phones users can easilly find item the are interested in.


Communication is provided by the ramp going around the Bombing Room from ground level both to underground and to the upper levels. The light is getting inside the buiding through half-transparent elevation and the special light shafts located on the top of each bombing spike.
